Second, I was pondering an interim solution to allow blog admins to somehow get pinged when a comment is made on their non-disqus-enabled blog.. in fact, could the ping functionality (like which WP uses when you link to an article) be used in this case?
I like the idea sending trackbacks to non-Disqus blogs. I liked it so much I implemented it right after reading your comment :)
I'm sent an email to the Disqus guys asking for help on some of the API stuff so the trackback contains the actual first comment and not just a generic "gReader Comments". The problem I was running into was knowing if someone commented because the page doesn't reload.
http://regulargeek.com/2008/04/14/comment-where...
Scroll down or search for "gReader" and you will find it. There seems to be a typo in the message body.. "do" instead of "so".
There does seem to be some sort of script error on the linked page:
Warning: implode() [function.implode]: Bad arguments. in /home/sixtart0/public_html/gReader/trackbacks/trackback_cls.php on line 368
Otherwise, looks good!

You might have to save it, and then do a "File | Open File" in order to install it.
• It's going to be somewhat flaky because it would just be scraping the page's html and checking for Disqus to grab the forum_id
• It would be taking a hit on loading speed
• The conversations I actually want to read are from people who would post through this - not every single blog: think of the FriendFeed conversations vs. Digg conversations - which ones do you really read?
Maybe I can convince the Disqus guys to add this to the API which would take care of 1 & 2.
Every RSS 2.0 feed has an item for the comments URL: http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/rss/rss.html
Looking at Steve's feed, even though he uses disqus it still points to the WordPress comments page: http://www.feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http...
But that's pretty moot, since the Google Reader API doesn't offer an entry point for getting the comments URL: http://code.google.com/p/pyrfeed/wiki/GoogleRea...

What you could do is use the same trick as Pagerization where it can import a cache of information from a wiki. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7623
Then you could have a wiki page where anyone can manage the lookup table between feeds and disqus comments. Using Google Code for a wiki is probably better than using Infogami, because it'll give you more control options and better speed.
Most likely, the post author will have no idea you posted a comment in here so I wouldn't use this as a means of trying to contact them. Either send an email, or post directly to the blog's comment system. Sorry for the confusion!
Cheers
Not sure where you'd like me to file any bugs I might find.. here is one. If you would like me to submit a different way, just let me know.
I found a bug trying to open a gReader comment on a feed from the site io9.com:
Warning: fopen(http://io9.com/379209/clone-wars-trailer-shows-all out-jedi-mayhem) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 500 Server Error in /home/sixtart0/public_html/gReader/comments_disqus.php on line 221
Failed when checking for Disqus thread.
Are you having any problems with the loading circle animation being stuck when you post comments?
As for the the loading circle animation, I haven't had that issue yet. I'll let you know if I do.
to pinpoint it last night!
"if you pass a URL with spaces, those have to be encoded to %20, and any
html entities such as & have to be decoded to & or the fopen() call
fails" [php.net]
This little piece of PHP code fixed the issue: str_replace(' ', '%20',
html_entity_decode($dispurl))
an overlay on Google Reader that when clicked on opens up an iframe. The
contents of that new iframe is in the following format:
http://www.sixteenseven.com/gReader/comments_di......
..
That's why a lot of these fixes/additions I'm doing are easy to push out
because they don't require you to re-install the extension.
This probably isn't common, but it seemed to crash Flock 1.1 (FF2 based) with Better GReader extension when I tried to switch to preview mode.
When it happened, I was trying to comment on http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheSecretDiaryOf...
and there were no comments (probably b/c of the feedburner part). Looks like it's fixed now.
Also, when scrolling a long section of comments (in gReader and here) on any FF2 based browser on Mac, everything gets messed up.
had time to document them quite yet. The biggest one is if the article has
Google Notes tied to it (from other users) they will be shown towards the
bottom now.
Firefox RC1 is released now. Can you update it so as to support RC1? Thanks!

As for Pings, I've actually already implemented that functionality. It tries a few different obvious trackback URLs to ping the original blog if it is not Disqus-enabled. It doesn't grab all of them, and I was having trouble if just one person commented...so after you comment you might refresh the iframe and see if it sends a ping!
I can see the 'comments' icon, but when I click on it, no comments appear. Even for posts which have comments on them, nothing shows via this software.
Is it necessary for the blog to have Disqus for us to see comments also?
I have a problem. The "Comments" link doesn't show anymore for some reason.
I'm using: gReader 4.2.2
Firefox 3.0
Ubuntu 8 / Intrepid
It was showing before, and I dont remember changing anything, other than gReader seem to have updated the main page again (I might be wrong).
Thanks ^^
PS
I only have: Add Star; Share; Share with note; Email; Keep unread; Add tags
post a DISQUS blog entry later this day and will link to your site.
Best, Markus
hmmm. that's weird. I could only install the plugin with the livehacker instructions but it won't work. I tried several "DISQUS blogs" but I can't see where I can post a comment within the google reader
Have I forgotten something? Install the plugin, restart FF then subscribe to a RSS Feed with DISQUS comments and I should see the extra box in Google Reader, right?
Would be very happy about a short anwer.
Markus
You should now see the "Comments" link next to all the others for *every* post, but only Disqus blogs will let you interact (all the others are read-only comments of twitter/friendfeed/wordpress).
http://is.gd/1yGln
the URL of my Google Reader looks like this http://www.google.de/reader/view/#stream/feed%2... for Gizmodo (no disqus)
btw: Bookmarklets work perfectly.
